2019 Haakon/Lenai Estate Pinot Noir

This bottling is from our estate-owned Dundee Hills vineyard. This inaugural vintage for the estate bottling showcases the true essence of the Dundee Hills.

The 2019 growing season was the coolest we had seen on average in 6 years. A healthy spring provided good timing on bud break, and a week of 90° temperatures in May set up great shoot growth. June really cooled off and temperatures held in the low 70s through August. It all comes down to September - particularly in cooler summers - and with average temps in the mid-60s plus 3 inches of rain falling in the 3rd week, the dogfight against the weather was starting to show its agenda of no mercy. All of our vineyards for Purple Hands are dry farmed; this puts us in a position to absorb the rain with positive effects, using the showers to motor the engine of the vine and continue to ripen the fruit. We put together our game plan, maneuvering and waiting to pick our vineyards until the first week of October, and pulled all of our 100 tons in to the winery in about 8 days at optimal ripeness. What I hope you identify with the 2019 vintage is richness, clarity, consistency, and complexity.

Wine Profile: dark chocolate, blackcurrant, black raspberry, cinnamon, clove, vanilla, cotton candy, black cherry, lavender, rose petal, tobacco, watermelon
